She opened her eyes and understood that the day of their journey had come. Kaija opened the window and took a deep breath of cold air.
‘Winter. Finally.’ — she thought with a sigh.
She looked at the field where she used to play being a kid, the lake, guide of her thoughts and secret dreams, the wood dark and cold but also a good hideaway.
She would miss this all. Who knows maybe they wouldn’t ever return…
— We will come back. I promise.
The voice was sleepy but full of confidence. Teller was sitting right behind her and looking at her.
She eyed him and smiled.
— How do you know? The road is long, that’s so far, far away… Through Twilight Hills and Icemountains, across Dead Lands of frozen fields. And even farther. So how do you know we’ll come back safely?
— I just feel this. I cannot explain. But you’ll feel it too when you can turn off all the worries.
Teller took her hand and looked deep in her eyes. She knew that everything would be fine. He saw this in her eyes.
She was afraid but desire of wonders and adventures was much stronger than her fear.
— Wolf, promise me one thing. Whatever happens you’ll take care of that child you loved once. That little girl with dreamy blue eyes.. if I’ll be reborn again.. Find me then. Promise me that you will protect me then?
He looked at her with sad and kind eyes full of dearest memories and feelings. He bent to her and whispered:
— Why should I run away from this path? Why should I turn away from the place I supposed to be? I’ll always take care of you. Wherever you are…
He kissed her lips and felt a tear falling on his cheek. Her tear…
When sun smiled thrice they went to the field. Their way was far and hard running across the fields and hills, far away from home. The journey to the Depth had begun.
